Celebrated writer/director Tim Etchells' work appeared in sites across Durham in 2009: seemingly inconsequential neon phrases that caught the viewer off guard, including Let's Pretend That None of this Ever Happened and Wait Here I Have Gone to Get Help.
Now Etchells returns with Will Be, a piece that continues his work with neon, a medium in which he has created a number of signs that often produce awkward moments of intimacy in public settings. The playful Will Be is a two-part installation that lets you to see into the future…
About the artist
Tim Etchells is one of the UK's most celebrated writer/directors. He has worked in a wide variety of contexts, notably as the leader of performance group Forced Entertainment and in collaboration with a range of visual artists, choreographers, and photographers. His work spans performance, fiction, and projects in visual art. His first novel The Broken World was published by Heinemann in 2008 and his monograph on contemporary performance and Forced Entertainment, Certain Fragments (Routledge 1999) is widely acclaimed. In recent years Etchells has exhibited widely in the context of visual arts, with solo shows at Gasworks and Sketch (London) and Künstlerhaus Bremen. His work has appeared in the biennales Manifesta 7 (2008) in Rovereto, Italy, Art Sheffield 2008 and Goteborg Bienale (2009). Selected groups shows include Netherlands Media Art Institute (Amsterdam), Sparwasser HQ (Berlin), MACBA, The Centre for Book Arts, Canada and Exit Art (all New York) and Kunsthaus Graz. He is currently Legacy: Thinker in Residence at Tate Research and LADA in London.
